Delaware Sea Grant

Across Delmarva via an ARCGis Story Map by Lisa Tossey

I assisted Chris Petrone, the education specialist for Delaware Sea Grant, with a series of teacher workshops this summer that had us transecting the Delmarva Peninsula from the Chesapeake Bay to the Delaware Bay, exploring various watersheds along the way. It made for quite a fun and educational road trip for participating teachers!

I decided to test out Esri's new story map template called Cascade, which is still in beta release, to document the workshops. It's been a bit glitchy at times, and although it promises to optimize images, it can take some time to load. However, I love how it allows you tell an immersive 'story' beautifully by combining images, video, and data!

Crab Cakes 101 - How to make a winning meal by Lisa Tossey

My latest piece for Delaware Sea Grant - we did our own little cooking demo, showing how to make the winning recipe from the Delaware Coast Day Crab Cake Cook-off. It was something different to do, and although we had to do it under a tight timeframe, it was a whole lot of fun!

Learn how to make the winning crab cake recipe from the 2014 Coast Day Crab Cake Cook-off through the capable hands of our seafood specialist, Doris Hicks! Full recipe: Top-Notch Crab Cake by Sarah Titus from Salisbury, Md.

Delaware Sea Grant's Marine Advisory Service agents are always fun to cover - they truly make learning enjoyable and memorable! Here are videos from two of their outreach efforts that I shot and produced recently.

Delaware Sea Grant and University of Delaware College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment educators hosted a wind education program with 125 first graders from Smyrna Elementary. Students rotated through four content stations, which included hands-on, interactive activities about wind and the Lewes turbine. The program was meant to supplement the first grade science unit, Catching the Wind.

Our Marine Advisory Service is working with counterparts in Louisiana and Oregon to offer in-service trainings for industry professionals on how to effectively explain what can be complex issues. Workshop attendees receive seafood quality and safety training and increase their technical knowledge and understanding of important global, national, regional and local issues and developments related to seafood safety and human health.
